A process is a sequence of steps to achieve a planned or desired outcome. Process Improvement (PI) is identifying, analyzing, challenging and improving existing business processes. The goal of PI is to
- stabilize the process to make sure each step is documented to be followed
- standardize the process to make sure everyone performs it the same way
- optimize the process to find the best way to execute the process
It is not uncommon for every individual who performs a process to do it in their own unique way. People create shortcuts they are comfortable with that actually reduce the effectiveness of the process. The result is less output with less consistency.
To improve the output, document your processes using the globally standardized symbols built into Word, Excel or PowerPoint. Create a graphic for group review and display it on the wall for comments toward improvement.
